Two more students have been taken into custody by the local police in connection with the tragic incident involving an 18-year-old student from Jadavpur University. The heart-wrenching event unfolded when this young student fell from a balcony on the university campus last Wednesday. The authorities have pointed out that these two individuals were actually present at the scene when the unfortunate
harassment of the first-year students was taking place. Prior to this, the police had already arrested Sourabh Chowdhury, an ex-student of the university, who now remains in custody until August 22. It’s been revealed that Chowdhury, who completed his MSc in Mathematics in 2022, had been living in the university hostel without proper authorization. The latest developments have led to the apprehension of Deepsekhar Dutta (19) and Manotosh Ghosh (20), the two suspects believed to have contributed to the emotional distress faced by the deceased student, Swapnodeep Kundu. Their alleged involvement is said to be under the influence of the primary suspect, Sourav Chowdhury, who is already in police custody. As the investigations unfold, it’s come to light that the victim endured severe ragging, prompting authorities to also explore the angle of potential sexual harassment. Disturbing reports indicate that students have often faced inappropriate comments and have been coerced into engaging in humiliating and even sexually explicit acts during ragging incidents within the campus. The incident took place late on the night of August 9. Swapnadip Kundu, a first-year Bengali (Honours) undergraduate student, tragically fell from the main hostel building’s balcony around 11:45 pm. Despite being rushed to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries at 4:30 am the following Thursday. According to his uncle, Arup Kundu, the young student had spoken with his mother on the evening of Wednesday. In the conversation, he expressed his distress and fear, prompting his concerned mother to inquire further. In response, he urgently requested her presence, hinting that there was something important he needed to share. Unfortunately, subsequent attempts to reach him went unanswered. A while later, his parents received the tragic call informing them about their son’s fall and urging them to quickly come to Kolkata.
